The contagious respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) affects the respiratory tract. While it typically causes mild, cold-like symptoms, it can be very dangerous for infants, particularly those who are vulnerable and/or under the age of 2 months, as well as for older adults. This virus is widespread globally and is particularly active in Canada during the fall and winter, when the risk of infection and illness is at its highest.
Who can receive the vaccine
Newborns and infants
- Under 6 months: Immunization is free at CLSCs, birthing centres and maternity wards (hospitals).
- 6-18 months: Immunization is free at local points of service for babies who meet certain criteria.
Adults
- People 60 and older who live in long-term care centres (CHSLDs) or intermediate resources for autonomous living support (RI-SAPA)
- People 75 and older who live in private seniors' residences (RPAs)
Certain adults, such as pregnant women (between the 32nd and 36th week of pregnancy) or those 60 and older, are eligible to receive the RSV vaccine at pharmacies or their medical clinic. However, please note: fees will apply.
