Child psychiatry outpatient clinic and Youth Clinic
Mission
The child psychiatry outpatient clinic provides services to children 0 to 15.5 years old who require psychiatric evaluation, pharmacological consultation or specialized treatment for mental health problems. The youth clinic has the same mandate, but serves young people aged 15.5 to 22.
Approach
Our approach is systemic and family-based, and we work closely with schools and community resources to provide holistic, family- and child-centred care.
Day hospitals
The Child Psychiatry Day Hospital offers a unique, systemic and multimodal English-language treatment program for children with mental health issues from kindergarten to grade 6, in collaboration with the English Montreal School Board. The program has a component for 5-to-8-year-olds and another for 9-to-12-year-olds. It’s designed for children who have a significant behavioural disorder that impacts their schooling.
Approach
Children considered for the day hospital program must be able to benefit from language-based group therapy, and their family must support a systemic approach. A significant commitment on the family’s part is required.
The goal is to provide the knowledge and support required to integrate children into the school environment best suited to their needs and within the community.
Children enrolled in the program are seen by a child psychiatrist; receive individual, group and family services from members of the multidisciplinary team on a daily basis; and partake in on-site schooling.
Admission criteria
- The child must be enrolled in a school.
- The child must have significant behavioural difficulties that impact their schooling.
- The parents must engage in the process.
Transition team
Mission
The transition team’s mission is to support young people and families who meet the admission criteria, have received services at the day hospital, and are returning to their neighbourhood school. Working closely with schools to ease the transition, the team includes:
- Psychiatrists
- Specialized educators
