Promotion
Health promotion aims to influence health in positive ways and help individuals, groups and communities to have greater control over their health. The objective is to increase everyone’s ability not only to stay healthy but to improve their health through better living conditions and lifestyles. Health is not simply the absence of disease, but having a body and mind that support a full life.
Prevention
Prevention aims to reduce risks that can lead to illness, psychological and social problems, and the consequences of trauma. By taking certain precautions, individuals can prevent the issue and thus avoid the need for medication or treatment. Getting vaccinated, using a condom and wearing a seatbelt are examples of prevention.
Services offered by the Community Health Promotion Program
Health promotion activities are offered by a nurse clinician who works for Public Health in the community.
The objective of the program is to help members of the public take care of their health, especially if those individuals are vulnerable and face additional difficulties. This service targets those who use community services in the area served by CIUSSS West-Central Montreal.
Community organizations and round tables can request a specific theme based on the needs of their clients and members. For instance:
- How to access health and social services.
- How can I find a family doctor? How can I make an appointment with a healthcare professional? How can I access psychosocial services?
- General information on promoting health and preventing illness.
- Infection prevention, nutrition, physical activity, healthy sleep habits and similar topics. For requests about specific subjects, the presentation may include the participation of a specialized clinician.
